제닛 브라운의 <찰스다윈 평전> 서평 서평자:최종덕 제닛 브라운 교수의 다윈 평전이 한국어로 출간되었다. 원저 1권은 1996년, 2권은 2003년 출간으로 7년의 차이가 있지만, 한국어로는 2권이 한 번에 나왔다. 원저로 1200여 쪽, 번역서로는 2100여 쪽에 이르는 방대한 대작이면서도, 실증적 사실의 엄밀함과 문장 하나하나에 배어있는 유려함, 그 어느 하나도 놓치지 않은 대단한 작품이다. <종의 기원>을 비롯한 다윈의 수많은 과학 업적은 현장 자료수집과 편지를 통한 청탁수집이라는 양대 방법론으로 이루어졌다. 건강문제로 1842년 런던 교외 다운하우스로 이사 한 다윈은 편지 덕분으로 많은 연구자료를 수합했다. 현존하는 편지가 14,000여 통이나 되니 말이다. 런던 교외 외딴 집에 앉아서도 지구 반대편 테즈메니아의 화석을 받을 수 있었던 것도 다윈 편지가 가진 ‘공간 초월의 힘’이었다. 서신자료 해석에 가장 뛰어난 학자인 브라운 교수는 그래서 평전 2권의 제목을 이 평전은 다윈이 남긴 사료의 실증적 분석에 충실하기도 하지만, 자신의 감정을 드러내기를 극히 꺼려했던 다윈의 성격을 학문과 삶의 전체 콘텍스트에서 새롭게 읽어낸 강점까지 갖는다. 생명진화가 문명진보와 다르고 모든 생명체의 공통조상이 있다는 다윈의 생각은 당대 사회를 위협하는 이단이어서 그로부터 야기된 사회적 충돌을 다윈은 감수해야 했다. 그래도 다윈은 끝까지 자신의 내면적 갈등을 문헌으로 표현하지 않았다. 브라운 교수의 분석력은 남달랐다. 서신자료에서 다윈의 내면적 갈등의 정서를 그녀의 언어로 새로이 복원했기 때문이다. 그래서 이 책은 그렇게 두꺼우면서도 아주 쉽고 재미나게 읽혀질 수 있었다. 이 책과 관련한 재미나고도 슬픈 이야기가 있다. 2009년 호주의 어느 교회재단에서 다윈의 비글호 항해기 다큐 형식을 빌어 창조론을 홍보하는 영화를 제작했다. 다윈 일대기를 보여준 것처럼 위장하느라 영화제목도 브라운 교수의 <다윈 평전 1권> 제목인 “항해”를 본따서 “세상을 뒤흔든 항해”라고 붙였다. 그들은 국제적으로 유명한 3명의 다윈 관련 과학사가들과의 인터뷰를 영화에 삽입했다. 인터뷰 내용을 임의로 편집하여 다윈 진화론이 스스로 오류였다는 내용을 조작하여, 학자들이 이에 동조하는 것처럼 만든 것이다. 멋모르고 인터뷰에 응했던 학자들은 강력하게 항의했지만, 영화는 이미 12개 언어의 디브이디로 배포된 이후였다. 그 중 한 사람이 재닛 브라운 교수였다. 달리 말하면 그의 다윈 평전이 막강한 호소력이 있다는 것을 반증한 사례다. 그 정도로 흥미있는 책이다. 그리고 엄청난 번역작업을 한 번역자의 대단한 끈기를 칭찬하고 싶다. ------------------------------------------------ 본인의 서평내용 가운데 문제영화에 대한 하버드 대학 과학사와 과학철학부 제닛 브라운 교수의 공식적인 항의문을 담은 The Perils of Publicity Three historians of science find themselves misrepresented by a film company’s selective reconstruction of Darwin’s voyage. In Darwin Year 2009 many historians have helped to bring our subject to the general public. Yet we are writing to the Newsletter with a cautionary tale. We have recently been featured in a documentary film, “The Voyage that Shook the World,” produced by Fathom Media of Australia and directed by Stephen Murray of Synergy Films, New Zealand. We were led to believe that the movie was being made to be shown as an educational film on Australian broadcast television and possibly elsewhere. Fathom Media was revealed to be a subsidiary of Creation Ministries International when publicity for the movie began to appear on the internet. We were alerted to the true nature of the movie by James Williams of the University of Sussex shortly before its release in about April of this year. Quick Links.... It is clearly intended to challenge evolutionism, but stops short of openly endorsing the more extreme alternatives favored by some creationists. It is highly critical of Charles Lyell’s uniformitarianism and features geologists who point to evidence of limited catastrophes in earth history, but it does not imply that the whole geological record is the product of a single flood. The interviews filmed with us have been edited to highlight certain aspects of Darwin’s views and character. Janet Browne’s remarks about his childhood delight in making up stories to impress people is used to imply that the same motive may have driven his scientific thinking. Peter Bowler’s description of Darwin’s later views on racial inequality is used in the film, but not Bowler’s account of Adrian Desmond and James Moore’s thesis that Darwin was inspired by his opposition to racism and slavery. Sandra Herbert’s comment that Darwin’s theory required explanation of many aspects of life was edited down to imply that his theory required explanation of all aspects of life. The overall impression is given that Darwin had an enquiring mind but was led astray by his theoretical preconceptions, a view backed up through interviews with several scientists, including one who expresses open doubts about evolution. The film also suggests that what is ultimately at stake is a clash of world views rather than the resolution of scientific questions.The Darwin bicentenary has offered many opportunities for historians to reach out to a wider public. The film “The Voyage that Shook the World” is one project that turned out differently than we imagined it would. Academics perhaps do need to be more aware of the fact that the media organizations are not always open about their underlying agendas. Had we known the true origins of Fathom Media, we probably would not have contributed, but the producers do have a point: if academic historians refuse to participate when movements they don’t approve of seek historical information, these historians can hardly complain if less reputable sources are used instead.
